What A Scare!

Pasir Ris West Plaza - Photo by Terrence Ong
PART 1. I Don't Feel Well.

Woke up this morning with a dry and painful throat.

It has been hurting for several days now, but I have not done anything except taking lozenges to ease the pain and hope it goes away. The wedding dinner I attended last night did not do anything but made it worse from the late nights and lack of sleep I have been deprived of.

I was thinking to call-in sick, but I had some important work I had to complete. Moreover, I had arranged for a group discussion with several other departments today, so I went to work anyway.

Fortunately I had to postpone the discussion to tomorrow since there were several key people unable to join-in due to urgent matters at the last minute. I could not really talk that much today anyway.

PART 2. The Call From Mom.

So I got some of my own work done instead and planned for more to finish when I received my Mom's call on my cell phone. Her tone was not the cheerful sound I normally hear whenever she calls.

Oh dear, hope nothing serious... I thought, no... prayed in my heart.

"Hi Mom, what's wrong?" I asked, bracing myself expecting the worst.

"Its your Dad..." she paused with a coarse voice, "he's not well..." my heart was beating faster, "he feels giddy and could not get up." Mom said, sounding very concern.

"He finds it difficult to walk to the toilet, so he stays in bed now." Mom continued.

"Yes. Ask him to stay in bed and don't get up until he feels alright again," I told her firmly, trying to keep my own self calm, "stay in bed to avoid falling down. We don't want him falling down." I reminded Mom.

"He is OK, he just needs to rest for a little longer this morning... too long than normal. It worries me." Mom replied.

"Giddy... any vomiting, pain in his chest or complaining of other thing than giddy?" I asked like an online paramedic... who has no clue as to what I was doing. I was just assessing how serious his condition was. Should I go see him immediately or should I just call for an ambulance?

"I'll come right over," I told Mom. "Get him ready if he can get up. I'll send him to the doctor."

"No, no its not that serious. He is resting now. He is complaining of giddiness," Mom replied, "but it would rest my mind if the doctor checks his condition... can you take half-day today?" She asked.

"Yes I can, if you think he can wait. I will be there by 1:00pm," I told her, "get him ready by then, but call me immediately if anything is wrong!"

So I took an urgent half-day off work and went straight to my parents' home. I told Sis about it. I thought she had to know. Funny... she was the only person I thought of calling amongst the 6 other siblings.

It rained hard when I reached their place. Dad was up and about. He seemed much better than when Mom described him in the morning. I felt a little relief just seeing him walking about getting himself ready to go.

He insisted that Mom followed us to the doctor's, so we waited out the rain until it was about 2:10pm. I guess he felt at ease when Mom is around him. Now Sis kept calling me for updates.

PART 3. What Is Wrong With Dad?

Took a cab to Oxford Medical at Pasir Ris West Plaza along Pasir Ris Street 72, beside the White Water Condominium. We were the first ones there, since the doctor just reopened after lunch.

Dad's blood pressure was 130/80 which was good for an 80 year old man. His lungs, clear of phlegm and normal. Phew!

The doctor asked some questions and asked to be updated on his colonoscopy he had last June. It was checked good and will have his annual check-up again in June 2006.

For now, he has a runny nose and a slight discharge from his left ear. A condition he failed to tell us until I asked him again at the doctor's reception.

"Other than a runny nose and a slight infection in his left ear, he is otherwise, a healthy man," the doctor said with a smile, "very good health for an 80 year old." He said, impressed with Dad.

"That explains his dizzy spells and unable to balance himself properly..." the doctor continued, "most likely due to these two conditions." He assured us. "He should be fine. I'll give him something for his..."

Double phew! I thought to myself. What a relief!.. as the doctor's voice drowned against my thoughts.

You give me a good scare, Dad! As I smiled to myself, looking at his wrinkled face. He appeared relief himself and smiled back when he noticed I was looking at him.

Thank you Allah for sparing him and caring for him... I just had to say my thanks in my heart as we sat down back at the waiting area, waiting for the medicines to be dispensed out.

PART 4. Laughing Lines On All Faces.

A heavy load had been lifted off Mom too. She was moody no more. The wrinkled lines on her forehead from frowning disappeared. In replacement, her laughing lines appeared as she smiled with relief.

Dad was his usual self again... quiet in general, but with occasional jokes here and there. Seemed like he did not need the medications at all, I thought. And Mom seemed to read my thoughts when she said the same, exact words to Dad.

We went shopping at NTUC Supermarket there and ended-up at Causeway Point, having dinner and shopping for necessities for their newly adopted babies.. the two Sister-Hamsters we gave them a few days ago.

The day started off quite "sickly" and very scary for me, but it ended-up with a happy tune with Mom and Dad safely home and loved. Sis was coming over to their place to cook dinner for them... Oops! We had dinner already.

I thank The Almighty for every day He grants us to be together.

Finally The Visits!

Whole Family at My Home on Hari Raya 2005
Its Friday! The The first Raya weekend is here!

Tomorrow, the whole Mohd Dom's large family will be go visiting to our grandmother's home and each other's houses as well.

Finally, we get to enjoy the Hari Raya Aidilfitri visiting together in one big entourage... storming into each others houses and enjoy each other's company.

The entourage will never be possible without chartering a coach for the day.

At S$35.00 an hour, the air-conditioned coach with its designated driver will take us all over Singapore to as many houses as possible within the space of 10 hours.

That will total to S$350.00 spent, but I volunteered to fork out S$200.00 while the balance will be spread across and shared amongst the rest of the families.

Wifey & Me With Daniel In The Coach on Raya 2005
Chartering a coach is so much efficient and convenient for various reasons:

  • Definitely cheaper per family than to take cabs or public transport that will take us to only a few homes.
  • Moreover, since it is raining season now, chances are you may end up waiting for cabs or get stuck at a train station or bus stop somewhere; spending more time on the journey than with your siblings.
  • Mom will not be needing a cab to move around, but join the whole "clan" together throughout the day.
  • With time saved, we may be able to go to our Uncles' and Unties' houses too.

The whole thing is just great and will be so exciting!

When there are about 30 odd people in a coach - mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, grandsons and granddaughters; with lots of catching-up to do and in a wonderful mood of celebration, everybody in their best Raya clothes... the whole day will be fantastic!

Like the many visiting years before that, I am like a child, excited and just cannot wait!

Viva Vivo-City!

VivoCity Danish & New-found Friend
After giving a visit to a new-born niece, my son and I went to a newly built mall.

The biggest mall in Singapore to date, VivoCity was not disappointing at all to me.

Getting there was a breeze via North-East MRT line. From Bugis Station, we transferred at Outram to NE-line, a stop away from Harbourfront station.

The most interesting of all is its roof-top on the 4th floor. The whole roof-top is a garden with a very large wadding pool, overlooking the harbour. That was the place we spent most of our time at.

Across the harbour is Sentosa Island Resort... a cable car-ride away.

My son was busy wadding through water and making friends...

Wow! He was really quick to actually make friends, talked like they had known each other long and exchange phone numbers and email addresses...

Very confident and good social skills, I was thinking then. Well, good for him!

I was busy... yes you guessed it, taking photos.

Not professional-looking, postcard composed-quality pictures, but just capturing the beautiful scenery there with what the day had in stored for all.

VivoCity Banquet Food Court
Plenty of rest rooms, so no waiting or overcrowding. Many food courts, the ones we went were Kopitiam and my favourite... Banquet, where we had our dinner before we left.

With a chance to look around, it is time to bring my parents outing and shopping with Wifey the next time, knowing my parents will enjoy relaxing at the roof-top garden.

Congrats My Bro!

Kandang Kerbau Women & Children Hospital
I received an MMS from my younger brother last Friday, 27th November 2006 while having tea break with my colleagues.

A wonderful MMS indeed. It said "Hi! Uncle Imran, I'm 10 mins old... Danial's Sista."

Praise The Almighty.

My Bro has just become a father to a daughter, his second child. Alya Kalysa is her name. Very unique yet modern name, but with a very good meaning behind its Arabic name.

Alya Kalysa 10 Minutes Old 27 Oct 2006Alya means perpetual and Kalysa means honesty.

The three of us finally got to see the little bouncing baby on Sunday, 29th November at KK Women & Children Hospital.

We left home just before noon, so we had our lunch at Kopitiam at the first level of the hospital.

Chicken Rice with green vegetables in oyster sauce for me to keep my weight in check, while Wifey and our son both had Chicken Macaroni Soup, while outside, the rain started pouring hard, clearing the haze away with it.

Never been so happy to see rain as I did that day! What a blessing!

Went to several baby shops at the hospital to find a gift for our new niece. One particular baby girl dress in white cotton with pink embroidery caught Wifey's eye.

With pouted lips and baby talk, she adored the tiny baby dress. It came together with a receiving blanket, a pair of booties and a pair of pink flower hair clips in a hamper for S$59.90. She just had to have it.

Headed up to the 8th floor room 8223 where the happy family was, to see our little niece. Alya Kalysa was all cozy; bundled-up and sleeping away.

Her Mom was well, and her father's smile was wide from one ear to the other, receiving us.

Alya with her Mom & Wifey
Kalysa looked so precious that sparked Wifey to keep looking at her, touching her... just adoring her. I kind of figured the mother instinct in her sort of kicked-in again as she looked at me.

I guess babies just melt women's hearts. The newborn sweet baby-smell just kicks the motherly instinct in a woman... if I sensed my wife's reaction correctly.

Sat there, traded some baby bringing-up tips and experiences... good, happy stories and tough, trying-times the both of us parents had gone through, bringing-up our children.

We would have gone for Hari Raya visiting to my siblings' homes, but Wifey had to open her shop for business to catch the weekend shopping fever heating up towards the end of the year - the school holidays, the annual dinner and dance parties and the mandatory Christmas shopping.

Was hoping to ride the free KK Hospital Shuttle Service to Wifey's shop, but it was not operating on weekends. Sigh.

Left in a cab for a rather short trip to Bugis Village to drop off Wifey, while my son and I went off to VivoCity for a quick look-see.

We had to make it quick since the next day was the start of our son's final exams.

Oh... do not worry, he has been diligently preparing for his exams with us and his tuition teacher these past few months, so today was a little break for him to relax his mind.

VivoCity was not disappointing at all.

Currently being Singapore's largest shopping mall, it was a great place for relaxation for me than a place for shopping. Thanks to the roof top garden and vast wadding pool overlooking Sentosa.

It was truly fun for my son who just waded through the large knee-deep pool and making friends with the other children there.

Poor Wifey; she was stuck in the shop today... but she came back happy and was exited to tell me how her day went. Business was brisk with lots of exciting "purchases" stories.

I count my blessings everyday. Amin.
